October is Fire Prevention Awareness Month – Keep your Home Safe with These Practical Tips
When most people think about fire safety, they picture smoke alarms, fire extinguishers, and escape plans—and while those are critical, many house fires actually start with something less visible: your electrical system.

1. Don’t Overload Outlets or Circuits
Plugging too many appliances or devices into the same outlet or power strip can overheat your wiring. Use surge protectors when needed, and distribute devices across multiple outlets when possible.
2. Replace Damaged Cords Right Away
Frayed, cracked, or pinched cords can expose wiring and spark. If you notice damage, replace the cord immediately rather than taping it up.
3. Don’t Hide Cords Under Rugs or Furniture
It may seem convenient, but hiding cords under rugs or behind heavy furniture is dangerous. Cords can overheat when covered, and friction from foot traffic or furniture edges can wear down the insulation, exposing wiring and creating a fire risk.
4. Know What Your Breaker is Telling You
Your electrical panel is designed to trip breakers when something’s wrong. If you notice frequent trips, flickering lights, or buzzing sounds, it’s a sign to call a licensed electrician before the issue worsens.
5. Upgrade Outdated Wiring
Many older homes in Southwest Florida still run on wiring that wasn’t built for today’s appliances and electronics. Outdated wiring can overheat and pose a major fire risk. A professional inspection can determine if it’s time for an upgrade.
6. Install Arc-Fault Circuit Interrupters (AFCIs)
Unlike standard breakers, AFCIs detect dangerous arcing—tiny sparks that can ignite fires behind your walls. Installing AFCIs in your home adds an extra layer of protection.
How to Tell If You Have AFCI Breakers
Wondering if your home already has this protection? Take a look at your electrical panel. A standard breaker will usually just have a simple switch with an “ON” and “OFF.” An AFCI breaker will have a small test button on the front, often labeled “TEST” (sometimes with “ARC FAULT” written on it). Pressing that button should trip the breaker and cut power, which confirms it’s working properly.
