Many of you probably already know that there is a little switch on the ceiling fan that allows you to change the direction of airflow. Many new models even come with remotes or wall switches that allow you to change the fan’s rotation with a mere push of a button.

Even though we commonly think of ceiling fans as only useful during hot summer months, they are also quite helpful in the winter months and will help keep the warm air flowing through the room.

To keep a room warm during the winter months the ceiling fan’s rotation should be set to “reverse” (clock-wise). This will gently draw the room air up towards the ceiling and force the warm air down and out towards the walls avoiding giving you a wind chill effect.  

Make sure that the fan speed is set to low, because you don’t want it to blow the air too hard and chill you instead of helping you circulate the warm air.

For a cooling effect during the summer months your fan should run in the forward direction (counter-clockwise).

This will force the room air down on you giving you the wind chill effect that will make you feel cooler.

While you also need to change the fan’s direction, you will need to set the fan’s speed to medium or possibly even high to generate enough speed to help recirculate the air back to the floor. In this case, you’ll have to be the judge of what speed will be most beneficial for you.
