The holidays are here and that means lights, music, parties, and plenty of gadgets plugged in at once. It’s the most wonderful (and power-hungry) time of the year!
At Sanibel Air & Electric, we love seeing Southwest Florida homes sparkle this season, but we also know this is when electrical systems work overtime. Before you flip that switch on your holiday display or plug in the inflatable snowman, take a few minutes to protect your home and family from overloads and fire hazards.
1. Inspect Before You Connect
A light strand that’s been tucked away for a year can hide cracks, frays, or loose wires. Give every cord and plug a quick once-over before it touches an outlet. If you spot exposed wire or smell anything “electrical,” toss it.
2. Make Sure Outdoor Means Outdoor
Holiday lights may look similar, but not all are made to brave Florida’s humidity. Use only UL-rated outdoor lights and cords for exterior setups.
3. Respect Your Circuits
Each outlet and circuit has a limit, and it’s easier than you think to cross it during the holidays. Overloaded circuits cause flickering lights, tripped breakers, and in worst cases, electrical fires.
4. GFCIs Are Your Holiday Heroes
If you’re plugging in lights outdoors or near water (like the kitchen or bathroom), make sure the outlet has GFCI protection. These outlets cut power in milliseconds if they detect a problem—and can
literally save lives.
💡 Quick test: Press the “test” and “reset” buttons to make sure your GFCI is functioning. If it doesn’t click back on, give us a call.
5. Smarter, Not Longer
Leaving lights on all night might make your house the brightest on the block, but it’s also a safety risk. Instead, use timers or smart plugs to automatically turn lights off at bedtime or when you’re not home
6. Keep Décor Cool and Clear
Keep flammable materials—like trees, wrapping paper, and fabrics—away from electrical sources. Use LED bulbs wherever possible; they use less energy and stay cooler to the touch.

7. Test Smoke and CO Detectors
A quick test today could prevent a tragedy tomorrow. Replace batteries and confirm your detectors are in working order before the season gets busy.
